What is Cycle Speedway?
Cycle Speedway is one of Britain’s own cycling disciplines, having originated in the late 1940s when young people began racing bicycles around compact dirt tracks built in parks and open spaces. From these grassroots beginnings, the sport has developed into an exciting and highly skilled discipline governed by the Cycle Speedway Federation, with clubs and competitions taking place throughout the UK and internationally.
Racing takes place on short oval tracks with riders competing over a small number of fast, tactical laps. The emphasis is on developing excellent bike handling, balance, awareness, acceleration and tactical decision-making—skills that transfer directly into every other cycling discipline, including road racing, cyclo-cross, mountain biking, BMX and track cycling.

Safe, Accessible and Affordable
Cycle Speedway is widely recognised as one of the safest introductions to cycle racing.
Sessions take place on fully enclosed, traffic-free tracks under the supervision of qualified British Cycling and Cycle Speedway Federation coaches. The compact nature of the circuit means riders are always within sight, allowing coaches to provide constant guidance and support while ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment.
It is also one of the most affordable forms of cycle sport. Specialist equipment is minimal, many clubs have bicycles available for beginners, and the clothing requirements are simple, making it an accessible activity for families wishing to introduce their children to organised cycling.
Learning Through Fun
Every coaching session is designed to be enjoyable, engaging and age-appropriate. Riders will develop:
- Balance and bike control
- Cornering and steering skills
- Stopping and acceleration
- Group riding awareness
- Safe riding techniques
- Confidence and independence
- Teamwork, sportsmanship and respect for others
As riders progress, they can take part in fun challenges and friendly racing, helping them build confidence while learning the fundamentals of competitive cycling.
A Pathway into Cycling
The City Academy Hub provides a clear pathway for young cyclists to continue their development.
For some, the sessions will simply provide an enjoyable weekly sporting activity and help build lifelong cycling skills. For others, they can become the first step towards participation in local, regional and national competition across a wide range of cycling disciplines.
Many successful cyclists began their journey by developing the same core handling and racing skills taught through Cycle Speedway.
Delivered Through Partnership
This exciting programme brings together the strengths of Essex Roads Cycling Club and East London Cycle Speedway Club.
By combining experienced qualified coaches with specialist Cycle Speedway facilities, the partnership offers young riders access to high-quality coaching in a welcoming and inclusive environment where everyone is encouraged to learn, improve and enjoy cycling.
Whether your child is taking their first steps into organised cycling or looking to develop their racing skills, the East London Cycle Speedway Hub provides the perfect place to start.
